Trial
of Joan of Arc A
Film by Robert Bresson
Robert Bresson, known for his
sparse and deceptively low-key
films, directs his version of
Trial of Joan of Arc, a stunning
study of innocence lost. Using
the exact transcripts of the trial
to formulate the film, Bresson
creates a world of factual tragedy
that will no doubt leave the viewer
rattled. We follow Joan as she
is imprisoned, interrogated, tried
and finally executed. Once the
final shocking act is realized,
it’s hard to deny the overwhelming
power of Bresson’s subtle
cinematic sword. Also featured
on this DVD is Dziga Vertov’s
Kino Pravda, a half hour collection
of newsreel shorts filmed in 1922
Russia.
